Irish History Consultant & Public Speaker

As an expert on "all things Ireland," I have been asked to speak at a variety of organizations about Irish history, contemporary Irish politics, and traveling to Ireland. Select engagements include:

• Chicago School of Professional Psychology: I taught the students about the Troubles in Northern Ireland in advance of their trip to study trauma counseling.
• Ancient Order of the Hibernians (Milwaukee): Update on Northern Ireland since the Good Friday Agreement
• Northwestern University Study Abroad Office: Educated undergraduate students about studying abroad in Belfast.
• Public Radio: Taught journalists about the Troubles, including the major players, the birth of the Irish Republican Army, and the circumstances that led to the Good Friday Agreement.

History Teacher

I teach history courses to students at this high-level co-ed independent school. Courses include ninth-grade Atlantic World History, tenth-grade United States History, and in future Islamic World History.

• Participated in the SEED (Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity) seminars in order to more fully integrate diverse perspectives into my classes, and to better facilitate challenging conversations and reflections.
• Member of the Working Group on Interdisciplinary Learning
• Faculty advisor to "The Review," HM's long-standing political magazine.

Private Tutor

• Build and run business providing one-on-one tutoring to students to improve writing skills.
• Evaluate and address diverse client needs through delivery of tailored teaching approaches:
• Develop non-native English speakers’ grammar and vocabulary.
• Hone Advanced Placement History students’ essay writing skills; raise scores on SAT Writing.
• Enhance corporate professionals’ style, grammar and vocabulary.
• Research and recommend textbooks, software and other learning materials to students to complement lessons.
• Accelerate student performance by providing feedback using positive reinforcement to encourage, motivate and build confidence.
• Assess and continuously communicate progress to students, parents and teachers.

History Teacher (Maternity Leave Replacement)

• Taught history classes to teenagers in 10th through 12th grade; classes include AP United States History, the American Presidency, Modern World History, and the United States and the world.
• Served as co-advisor to Model United Nations, and chaperoned students to several overnight conferences.

History/Humanities Teacher/10th Grade Advisor

• Taught 10th through 12th grades at independent, co-educational, college-preparatory school; delivered differentiated instruction to students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
• Led 11th and 12th grade US History classes; co-led 10th grade World History/Humanities class; developed curricula and planned lessons, incorporating multidisciplinary material (film, music, poetry).
• Trusted faculty advisor and mentor to selected sophomores; reviewed their academic programs/schedules, helped formulate preliminary plans for college, facilitated discussions on topics such as sexism, feminism and racism, and delivered sexual education information.

Instructor, Adult Education Seminar

• Created courses at independent humanities research library with collections centered on the history and culture of Western Europe and the Americas.
• Taught seminars to adult students, including The History of Northern Ireland, The History of the Irish Revolution, The History of Gender in the United States and The History of the Holocaust.
• Facilitated seminar-style discussions and integrated film, music and graphic novels into lectures and presentations to heighten students’ understanding of topics.

Associate Lecturer

• Designed curriculum and taught Holocaust: History, Memory and Education, an upper-level interdepartmental (History/Jewish Studies/Education) seminar for undergraduate and graduate students.
• Integrated methods from history, theories of memory and pedagogical approaches on how to teach the Holocaust to kindergarten through adult students.

Teaching Assistant

• Led weekly discussion sections in The History of Irish Nationalism course.
• Facilitated student thought and analysis of material through guided questions; monitored progress and graded examinations.

Instructor

• Created and taught The History of Northern Ireland, seminar at nonprofit organization promoting Irish culture and Irish American cultural contributions to the US via the study of art, music, dance, history and literature.
• Developed syllabus, selecting readings and using an interdisciplinary approach to enhance students' understanding of the topic through integrating poetry, art and music into the course.
